Even
though my work is representational and can be very detailed, I
approach painting with a fluid style. Often preparing the paper or
board with gesso applied with expressive strokes, I can't wait to see
how the watercolor or acrylic paint pools and flows on the textured
surface as the subject takes shape.
Making art is an expression of love. I have loved nature since my parents chose “Green” as my middle name. Rivers, wetlands, meadows, birds, flowers – they all stir my heart. Painting them is one way for me to connect to the natural world, so, it should be no surprise that I have painted many waterscapes, landscapes, bird close-ups and bridge scenes. Paddling is also a passion and I am currently undertaking a project to paint a watercolor of each of the sixteen boat launch sites in Chemung and Steuben Counties.
I also enjoy painting the constructed landscape, dear to people's hearts. My “Spires” series – buildings in and around Corning such as CFA, Northside Blodgett, the Rockwell Museum, the Little Joe Tower and the Corning Children’s Center, are area icons that elicit a deep emotional response. Painting commissioned house portraits that bring tears to the owners' eyes is a highlight for me.
My painting, then, is connection – my connection to my subject - be it nature or neighborhood, the connection with my materials and, then, the emotional connection between my work and the viewer.
